In this lesson you will learn about the physical characteristics of both ionic and covalent (molecular) compounds
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
- compare the properties of ionic and covalent compounds;
- specifically state the main trends of boiling points, melting points, conductivity of electricity and heat, and solubility of both ionic and covalent compounds;
- list and explain the various types of Intermolecular Forces (IMFs) acting on ionic and covalent compounds including electrostatic attractions, dispersion forces (London dispersion), dipole-dipole forces.
- rank the various IMF from strongest to weakest.
Let’s start with a look at the properties of ionic and covalent compounds presented in the video lesson below. Once again, please watch the lesson and take detailed notes.
