In this lesson, you will learn about nomenclature, the field of chemistry dealing with the naming of compounds and the writing of their formulas (plural formulae). By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
- write names of binary ionic and ionic compounds containing polyatomic atoms;
- use the criss-cross method for writing the formulae of both binary ionic and ionic compounds with polyatomic ions;
- use the stock system for naming compounds containing atoms with multiple valences
- use prefixes and suffixes for naming families of polyatomic ions with varying numbers of oxygen atoms;
- use prefixes for naming binary covalent compounds with hydrogen and covalent compounds with more than three atom;.
- name binary acids using both the classical system and the IUPAC system of nomenclature;
- name oxyacids using a staircase method for the varying number of oxygen atoms;
- use IUPAC rules to name acidic salts resulting from the combination of H with polyatomic ions;
- differentiate between oxides and peroxides and recognize the peroxide ion;
- list and name additional acids and radicals (polyatomic ions) and know their formulae;
- write the name and formulae of compounds in which an O atom is replaced by am S atom, commonly known as Thio compounds
Let’s begin by examining the rules for naming ionic and ionic compounds with polyatomic ions in the video lesson below. Please watch the video lesson closely and take detailed notes.
This second video lesson below introduces you to the rules governing the naming and formula writing of covalent compounds (molecular) acids, bases, additional acids and radicals as well as compounds with the Thio group. Because nomenclature requires a great ability to memorize and recall rules and exceptions to rules, you are best to take very detail notes and then use them to review this material.
Polyatomic Ions Table. Below is a table of all the polyatomic ions you need to know for this course. Please print it out and used as a reference.
