Proteins vs Lipids in the Cell Membrane
How does the amount of lipids and/or proteins in the cell membrane contribute to its overall function? For example, how would the structure and function of a cell composed of 70% protein and 30% lipids, differ from that of a cell composed of 90% lipids and 10% proteins?
The lipid/protein content in cell membranes affects the fluidity of a membrane. That is, a cell membrane with a 90% lipids and 10% proteins would be more fluid that a cell membrane with 30% lipids and 70% protein. Depending on the cell function and type, its lipid/protein would vary as cells have different roles (example a brain cell membrane will have a different protein/lipid composition than a muscle cell as they perform different functions and this require different transporters for ions and molecules.
